Binned battery led to recycling centre blaze
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue ServiceA fire at a recycling centre which took days to bring under control was started by a discarded battery, investigators have said.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at about 20:00 BST on Saturday 5 September to a fire off Staveley Lane, Eckington.
Crews from Alfreton, Clay Cross, Clowne and Staveley fought the blaze through a "challenging" night, and had to then return to the site "on several occasions" to stop hotspots from flaring up.
An investigation into the fire has now found the cause to be a lithium battery.
Following the investigation, the brigade has issued a warning to remind people of the importance of safely disposing of batteries.
In a social media post, Fawkes Recycling - the operator of the centre - said it had now reopened and thanked "friends, neighbours and everyone who has offered help and support".
It said: "This site is more than just a business to us. It's our lives, our team and our future. The phoenix is rising."
