Crews return to fire at recycling centre

Crews have returned to a fire at a recycling centre in Derbyshire after staff reported seeing flames.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called at 19:54 BST on Saturday to a fire off Staveley Lane, Eckington, and after a "challenging night" remained on site damping down until late on Sunday morning.

A reinspection had been scheduled for Monday, but on-site monitoring teams reported seeing flames.

Crews from Staveley and Clay Cross stations returned at 11:45 on Monday to tackle hotspots.

Derbyshire Fire Service said on Monday afternoon that two fire engines and a water carrier were in attendance.

A spokesperson added: "As a reminder, please avoid the area where possible and keep windows and doors closed if you notice smoke."

In a social media post, Fawkes Recycling - the operator of the centre - said the site remained closed on Monday and thanked "friends, neighbours and everyone who has offered help and support".

It stated: "This site is our world. We have put everything into building this business, and coming so close to potentially losing it has been incredibly stressful and emotional.

"Thankfully, we have been very lucky and the damage to our site is relatively minor and repairable."
