Firefighters tackle blaze at recycling centre

Firefighters have urged people to avoid the area as they continue to tackle a blaze at a recycling centre near Eckington.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called at 19:54 BST on Saturday to a fire off Staveley Lane.

The service said on Saturday evening six engines, a water carrier and a command support unit were in attendance, but added on Sunday two crews remained at the scene to continue dampening down.

It advised people to keep windows and doors closed if they could see or smell smoke.

In a social media post, Fawkes Recycling - the operator of the site - said it received a call at about 19:30 on Saturday from a neighbour warning there was a fire at the site.

"Within minutes, the fire brigade were on site, alongside our incredible team. Everyone worked together with the fire service to bring the situation under control quickly and, most importantly, safely," the firm added.
