A drink driver who brandished an air rifle and led police on a pursuit near a school has been jailed for four years and four months.

Cambridgeshire Police was told James Lonergan was being rowdy in Copeland in Bretton, in Peterborough, on 22 October, and had fired the weapon and waved it in the air.

After armed officers arrived at the scene, police said he rammed a Land Rover into their car and led them on a pursuit that ended after he drove past a school as children left for the day.

The 59-year-old, of Copeland in Bretton, was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on 23 June.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, drink-driving, possessing a knife in a public place and possessing Class B drugs.

The pursuit ended as he drove past Nova Primary Academy in Middleton in Bretton.

Det Con Rebecca Corder said: "Lonergan's behaviour was disgraceful.

"To brandish a firearm in the street and then lead officers on a pursuit near a school, all while over the drink-drive limit, is reckless beyond belief.

"I'm pleased he was apprehended before anyone was hurt and has now been jailed."
