Hundreds of people have attended the opening of Oxford's first Hindu temple.

The milestone marks years of work by the city's Hindu community, which had previously gathered in school halls and community centres.

The former sports pavilion in Marsh Lane, Headington, has been converted to provide a permanent mandir - a dedicated place of worship.

Celebrations began with dhol drumming and Bhangra on the green before a procession to Oxford Hindu Mandir and Community Centre for ceremonies, dancing and singing.

A consecration ceremony called Pran Pratishtha was held on 23 May.

As well as ceremonial worship, the mandir will also offer festival programmes, language and music classes, as well as space for community organisations.
