Town council backs moving land train idea forward
VISITDORSETProposals for a land train in Scarborough have received backing from the town's council.
A proposed land train could improve connectivity in the resort and offer views of key sites in the town, a recent meeting heard.
Members of Scarborough Town Council's community and place committee were supportive of the move if it could be arranged safely and practically, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
However, councillors noted that questions regarding practical issues would have to be clarified, and the authority agreed to invite potential operators to present their ideas.
Councillor Rich Maw told the meeting on Wednesday: "An entrepreneur asked me why Scarborough doesn't have a land train like Bridlington, and I thought, let's have a look at how we might progress that.
"Given the potential benefits, it's a practical solution to improve connectivity across the town."
Maw, an independent, said a land train could link key destinations and offer "a fun and alternative way to travel".
Issues the move had faced in the past included highways concerns and the impact on traffic in parts of the town, he said.
Reform UK member William Stuart said: "In my mind, it's about due diligence and whether we're capable of doing that.
"What impact would that have on traffic congestion during peak tourism periods?"
Councillors endorsed the proposal to ask for advice from North Yorkshire Council and to invite interest parties to present their ideas to the committee.
