Disruption warning as bridges to close for repairs

Drivers are being warned of travel disruption ahead of two bridges closing for repairs.

A bridge deck replacement on the U2093 at Bridekirk Bridge in Cockermouth and maintenance works on the C1041 at Cammock Cottage Bridge, Brisco, near Carlisle, will go ahead on 1 September.

Cumberland Council said the road closure at Bridekirk Bridge would continue for at least three weeks, with the deck replacement ensuring "the long-term safety and resilience of the structure".

Meanwhile Cammock Cottage Bridge will be shut for at least four weeks, with a diversion route signed via the unrestricted sections of the C1041 Brisco Road, Lamb Street, Scalegate Road and Newbiggin Road.

During the Bridekirk Bridge closure no users will be permitted including emergency service vehicles, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.

In Brisco, access for emergency service vehicles, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be allowed during the work.

In October, it was revealed the cost of repairing Cumberland Council-maintained bridges was expected to exceed £6m this financial year, compared to less than £4m in each of the two previous years.

In Freedom of Information data, the authority said it expected to spend £4.2m in 2025-26.

It also said 326 of its bridges were in poor condition, while a further 38 were very poor - adding up to almost half of the bridges it maintains.
