A man has been taken to hospital after being stabbed in the chest in Carrickfergus, County Antrim.

It happened shortly after 19:30 BST on Wednesday in the Rodgers Quay area of the town.

The victim also sustained injuries to his head.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said a male suspect is believed to have fled the scene on the back of a motorbike.

The suspect has been described as being approximately six feet in height, of medium build, and aged in his 40s.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said it dispatched one emergency ambulance to the scene.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries following the incident.

At this time, they are not believed to be life threatening.

The stabbing happened at a motorcycle event near Carrickfergus Castle.

Detective Inspector Lenaghan said the event, which takes place on a regular basis, "generally passes off peacefully with no issues".

Detectives are appealing for information and witnesses.

"There were a large number of people in the area at the time of the incident, and we would urge anyone who can assist us with our enquiries, or who has any information which could help, to get in touch," Lenaghan added.

In a post on social media the Storming the Castle event organiser Dean Morris thanked people for their support.

"Unfortunately, there was a regrettable incident during the event which in no way reflects the purpose, values, or intentions of this community meet," he said.

"We wish all injured parties a full and speedy recovery.

"This community has been built through hard work, passion, and mutual respect, and we do not intend to let one incident destroy what so many people have worked hard to create."
