An area for unwanted items in good condition to be dropped off for others to collect at a tip on the Isle of Man is set to reopen next month.

The reuse section at the Northern Civic Amenity Site, on the outskirts of Ramsey, was closed amid a row over funding for the site and the appointment of a new operator.

Infrastructure Minister Tim Crookall said, while the provision was in the contract the department had given Manx Rock "a lead in time" to prepare the area at the site but it would now reopen on 1 July.

The site, which is one of four regional tips on the island, is paid for by contributions from the seven northern local authorities.

Ramsey Commissioners had operated the site on behalf of its fellow northern authorities - Ballaugh, Lezayre, Garff, Andreas, Jurby, and Bride - since 2017.

The joint board's contract was handed back to the department in April 2024 after Bride's withdrew its financial contribution, however, Ramsey Commissioners agreed to continue managing the site for a further year.

'Sorry taken that long'

The site allows for the disposal of garden and household waste, including electrical items and furniture by residents in the seven northern local authority areas.

It was closed on 23 March to private road maintenance contractor, Manx Rock, to take over its management, with it reopening on 20 April.

Facing questions over the continued closure of the reuse area in the House of Keys, Crookall confirmed the contract included the reinstatement of the facility, but the department had "given them a lead in time to prepare that area".

"I am sorry it's taken that long, and they are, but they have to prepare that area," he added.

The department previously confirmed that all seven authorities were once again contributing to the cost of running the site.

But Crookall said work to create a new joint governance structure for the local authorities to manage the site was ongoing.
