A man has been rearrested on suspicion of murdering a woman more than 30 years ago following a "significant development", police say.

The body of 32-year-old Carol Clark, from Bristol, was found partially clothed in reeds at the side of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal on 28 March 1993, having been strangled and her neck broken.

The man arrested at a property in Gloucester on Tuesday was previously arrested by police in April 2023 and had remained under investigation.

"Today's arrest is a significant development in our investigation to identify Carol's killer and bring them to justice," Det Ch Insp Wayne Usher, head of Gloucestershire Constabulary's Major Crime Investigation Team, said.

Clark was last seen alive getting into a Volvo car on Picton Street in the Montpelier area of Bristol at about 23:30 on 26 March 1993.

Her body was discovered by a dog walker at Sharpness Docks less than two days later.

Gloucestershire Police said the arrest came after a significant development in the force's inquiry.

"For the past 33 years we have worked hard to solve this case, and we continue to leave no stone unturned," Usher said.

"Last month, we issued a renewed appeal to the public for information about Carol's death and I remain grateful for the support both the media and the public continue to give us.

"Our thoughts remain with Carol's family at this time and we will continue to keep them informed about any further developments."

Clark's family have been made aware of the development and are being supported by specialist officers.
