Installation of a new heating system at Ulverston Market Hall will begin on Monday

Work to replace the boiler at Ulverston Market Hall will get under way on Monday.

The installation of a new and improved heating system marks the first phase of a number of planned repairs and renovations for the market hall.

Westmorland and Furness Council said the upgrade would lead to a "warmer, more comfortable environment for stall holders and shoppers this winter".

The local authority said the programme of works was expected to last up to eight weeks and had been designed to minimise disruption.

"Most activities will be undertaken outside of trading hours, and within an isolated work area," said a council spokesperson.

"A brief heating interruption will be required during the switchover."

'Heart of the town'

A temporary boiler was installed last winter so that the market hall could remain open.

This will be replaced with permanent ultra-low emission, gas condensing boilers.

Further works will follow to deliver roof repairs, external wall upgrades and new security measures, as well as improvements to internal areas including full redecoration, the addition of steel windows, remedial works, electrical upgrades and the installation of a Changing Places toilet.

The council said it was in the final stages of planning the work and would be in touch with traders in coming weeks.

Deputy Leader Andrew Jarvis said the market hall was "an important building at the heart of the town".

He added: "Investing in essential improvements helps ensure the market hall remains a welcoming, comfortable and thriving place for traders, shoppers and the wider community for years to come.

"This investment reflects our commitment to maintaining and improving our key public buildings, preserving important community assets while making them more efficient, resilient and fit for the future.

"We would like to thank traders, customers and local residents for their patience and understanding while these essential works are carried out."

Westmorland and Furness Council has also said that investment will continue in The Coro during October, involving essential electrical upgrades and maintenance.

The building will be closed to the public on Wednesday 14 October and Thursday 22 October to allow for the work to be carried out.
