Dorset has received £1.1m of funding to end rough sleeping by Christmas

A task force has been set up to ensure all rough sleepers in a rural county have a place to stay by Christmas.

About 25 people are currently known to be living on the streets in the Dorset Council area, with the highest numbers in Weymouth, Bridport and Lyme Regis.

Dorset has been allocated £1.1m of government funding as part of a £442m, UK-wide package to provide those people with a route off the streets.

The task force involves housing, health, support services and voluntary sector organisations, who will assess needs, coordinate referrals and identify the most appropriate accommodation and support for each person.

A double decker bus at Weymouth's Park and Ride, run by the Bus Shelter charity, will be recommissioned as a night-time assessment hub as part of the scheme.

The lower deck will be used for assessments, with the upper deck providing accommodation for up to six people.

Charities the Lantern Trust and Alongside are also providing support.

Dorset Council is working to secure bed and breakfast places for people with additional health needs or pets.

Landlords are being urged to join rent-in-advance and tenancy support schemes that help people move into sustainable, private-rented homes.

Health and housing councillor Gill Taylor said: "Dorset has consistently recorded some of the lowest levels of rough sleeping in the country, reflecting the dedication of our council teams and voluntary sector partners.

"Nobody should have to sleep rough.

"By working together... we are building on our strong track record and making sure people receive not just a bed for the night but the support they need to rebuild their lives and achieve a more secure future."

Dorset has been allocated additional government funding, with the priority phase - Routes off the Street by Christmas - receiving £1.1m of support.
