Swanage all-weather lifeboat was sent to locate the fishing boat four nautical miles (7km) offshore east of Old Harry Rocks

A fisherman has been rescued after being spotted waving for help from his upturned boat by a passing yacht off the Dorset coast.

The 24ft (7m) fishing boat capsized east of Old Harry Rocks four nautical miles (7km) off Swanage on Tuesday at about 12:15 BST. The crew onboard the yacht raised a mayday with HM Coastguard, who requested Swanage lifeboat to launch.

The RNLI said before the lifeboat crew arrived, another fishing boat had managed to pull the man, the only person on board, from the water as he held onto the "barely floating", upturned hull.

He was transferred to the lifeboat "cold and shocked" and taken to Poole Quay yacht haven to be checked over by an ambulance crew, the RNLI said.

The RNLI added HM Coastguard were informed of the upturned hull's position, so warnings could be issued to other vessels in the area.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said salvaging the capsized fishing vessel was now the owner's responsibility.
