Drivers filmed passing too close to cycling police

Plain-clothed police have taken to their bikes to film motorists who passed too closely during overtakes.

The officers filmed vehicles and flagged eight motorists for close-pass overtakes or overtaking at junctions in London Road, Thetford.

The drivers were then stopped by uniformed officers as part of road safety initiative Close Pass which also aimed to show the risks of following cyclists too closely and also turning left across their path.

"Cyclists are among our most vulnerable road users and drivers have a responsibility to give them sufficient space when overtaking," said Insp James Shepherd of the Norfolk Roads and Armed Policing Team.

"A little more patience and consideration can make a significant difference in preventing collisions and keeping everyone safe on Norfolk's roads."

Unless the offence is serious enough to require immediate enforcement action, such as dangerous or drink-driving offences, motorists were offered the opportunity to take part in a "roadside educational intervention".

All eight motorists in Thetford opted for the session designed to help them understand why their actions, police said.

A "pass mat" is used to show the recommended clearance of at least 1.5m (4ft 11in) when passing a cyclist.

Drivers who decline the roadside intervention are issued with a Traffic Offence Report (TOR), which may be considered for offences including careless or inconsiderate driving.
