New crossing replaces patrol outside city primary

A much-needed crossing has been installed outside a primary school in Peterborough following calls from residents and councillors for improved road safety.

The crossing has been added outside Newark Hill Academy, on Eastfield Road, between Parnwell and the city centre.

The school previously had a crossing patrol officer, but the role was removed as part of Peterborough City Council's 2024-25 budget cuts.

Ishfaq Hussain, Conservative councillor for Dogsthorpe, said: "I have actively campaigned and pushed highways officers to install a safe crossing on one of the busiest roads in the city."

"I am glad the current administration and officers have listened and put the safety and needs of residents above capital expenditure," he added.

Last year, the council agreed to cut patrols at four primary schools, including in Old Fletton, Newark Hill, Eye and Werrington in a bid to save £40,000 a year

The issue prompted calls from residents and councillors for alternative safety measures outside schools in these areas.

Following a campaign by parents, the crossing patrol officer at Eye Church of England Primary School was reinstated for a further academic year.

Angus Ellis, cabinet member for transport, said: "By installing this crossing, it shows that we listen to concerns and take action to ensure everyone can use our highways safely, which is our utmost priority.

"In this case, I'm sure the crossing will have a positive effect, especially for local schoolchildren travelling to and from school."
