Dr Mat Dorrian praised his predecessor, Dr Peter Rabey, for his "excellent stewardship"

Dr Mat Dorrian has been appointed as Guernsey's next medical director.

The role is responsible for the development and delivery of patient-centred care in the island and he will take up the role from 1 December 2026 - following the retirement of Dr Peter Rabey, who will be retiring after 11 years in the role.

Dorrian said he would be working closely with healthcare professionals across Guernsey to "continue improving services for islanders".

He has experience as the island's Emergency Department Consultant, as a GP at Queens Road Medical Practice and is a previous representative of the British Medical Association.

Dorrian was awarded an MBE in 2020 in recognition of his role in the island's response to the Covid pandemic.

He said: "Throughout my career, I have seen first-hand the commitment, expertise and compassion that staff bring to caring for our community every day.

"It is a privilege to take on this role and support them in delivering the highest possible standards of care."

Deputy George Oswald, President of the Committee for Health & Social Care and a doctor, said: "His appointment comes at a crucial time for healthcare, and I know he will provide strong clinical leadership to meet the needs of islanders now and in the future."
