Road closures as Tyne Bridge restoration continues

Road closures have been announced as restoration of the Tyne Bridge continues.

Newcastle City Council said it had made "good progress" on repairing the structure and teams were next carrying out inspections and cleaning the twin beams before the next section's restoration and repainting gets under way.

Since the project began in April 2024, more than 2,000 individual repairs have been made to the bridge, ahead of its 100th anniversary celebrations in October 2028.

Lombard Street, Queen Street and Akenside will remain shut from Monday for four nights from 18:00 until 02:00 BST, while Queen Street and Akenside is to close from 07:30 to 17:00 on 14 and 15 September.

Great North Run signage has also been installed on the bridge ahead of one of Tyneside's biggest events.

In its 45th year, the 13.1-mile (21km) event involves runners and wheelchair users beginning in Newcastle, racing through Gateshead and South Tyneside before finishing in South Shields on 13 September.
