Scaffolding removed from Tyne Bridge's west wall
Gateshead CouncilScaffolding has been removed from the Tyne Bridge's west parapet, unveiling another restored section.
Renovation work on the structure, which carries traffic across the River Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead, has been ongoing since April 2024.
Gateshead Council said the steelwork from the road deck down, from tower to tower, had now been fully restored.
The council said on the east side of the bridge, grit blasting was under way to remove previous layers of paint from the parapets, screen plates and arch chord ends, allowing steelwork repairs to be identified and programmed.
Gateshead CouncilInspection work in 2022 found steel work had corroded due to peeling paintwork, damaged deck joints, leaking drains and damage to the road surface and pavements.
Newcastle City Council previously said work on the bridge remained on course to be finished by October 2028, in time for the structure's 100th anniversary celebrations.
