Man in court accused of killing three Vespa riders

A motorist accused of causing the deaths of three Vespa riders by dangerous driving has appeared in court.

Hugh Campion, 70, from Upton Scudamore in Wiltshire, allegedly hit three people travelling in the opposite direction on the A36 at Knook on 31 May 2025.

One of the Vespa riders, 62-year-old Robert Best from Bradley Stoke in Bristol, died at the scene. Marie Jones, 64, a pillion passenger on another Vespa, and Timothy Davies, 62, who was riding the third - died in hospital from their injuries.

Campion, who appeared at Salisbury Magistrates' Court earlier, has also been charged with causing serious injury to Gary Jones by dangerous driving.

Paying tribute after his death, Best's family described him as "loved and adored", adding he had been travelling to France for "his next adventure" when the crash happened.

Campion, who spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address during a brief hearing earlier, did not enter any pleas and was released on unconditional bail.

He is next due to appear at Salisbury Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on 16 September.
