A 20-year-old has been arrested after a man was repeatedly stabbed in his back in an "extremely violent" attack in a city centre.

The victim, in his 30s, has been left with life-threatening injuries after the stabbing on Great Ducie Street, Manchester, at 23:30 BST on Saturday, Greater Manchester Police said.

The force said a man was being held for questioning on suspicion of assault after being arrested just 17 minutes after the attack took place.

Ch Insp Peter Crowe said officers were working to support the victim and his family "at this terrifying time".

"This was an extremely violent attack," he said.

"Detectives are working hard to understand the motive behind this attack.

"However, we do not believe there to be a wider threat to the community."

The victim is being treated in Manchester Royal Infirmary.
