At least two schools have had to close after their water supply was cut off when a pipe burst.

The Commonweal School and King William Street Church of England Primary School, both in Swindon's Old Town, said they had to shut, with the former having to cancel exams for some of its pupils.

Thames Water apologised for the inconvenience and said it had located the burst pipe on Pipers Way and had "carried out valve operations" to restore the water supply. It said it would take time for "pressure to fully stabilise".

The company said it had tankers in the area to support and stabilise the network while repairs were ongoing and that it would provide a further update by 15:30 BST.

In a Facebook post on its website, The Commonweal School said it had been forced to close and that students had been told to contact their parents for permission to leave.

It said Drama and Modern Language exams for Year 11 and Sixth Form students had been cancelled and would have to be rescheduled.

It is not the first time that The Commonweal School has had to shut because of a burst pipe.

The school closed in June 2025 and moved to remote learning in May 2024 because of similar incidents.

King William Street Primary School said its pupils had been sent home though the water supply was subsequently restored.
