Both sides of the motorway were shut for several hours on Monday to allow for the car to be recovered

An 18-year-old woman has died after her car left a motorway and caught on fire.

Wiltshire Police said the crash, involving a Vauxhall Corsa, occurred on the M4 westbound between junctions 16 and 17 at about 17:35 BST on Sunday. The woman's next of kin have been told.

The motorway had been shut between the westbound and eastbound carriageways since 15:00 on Monday to enable the car to be recovered from an embankment with a specialist crane.

National Highways confirmed the M4 reopened just after 19:00, although one westbound lane remained closed.

Officers also appealed for any witnesses of the crash or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to get in contact.

A separate crash also closed the road in the early hours of Sunday, between junctions 14 (Hungerford) and 15 (Swindon East). This section of motorway has since reopened.
