Major road scheme near Beverley is completed

A road improvement scheme that has taken two-and-a-half years to complete is due to open on Friday.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said the Jock's Lodge scheme, near Beverley, which cost £87m, was the largest highways project ever undertaken by the local authority.

On Friday evening, the A1079/Jock's Lodge roundabout will fully reopen, with the remaining restrictions on the A164 due to be removed in the coming weeks.

Councillor Michael Lee said: "I want to say a big thank you to drivers for their patience and understanding through all the construction work, but I'm sure they will soon benefit from smoother journeys on this route to the rest of the East Riding."

Work began in January 2024 on the scheme, which affects two of the area's busiest routes, the A164 between Hull and Beverley and the A1079 between Hull and York.

A new dual carriageway on the A164 between Beverley and Skidby roundabout has been created and a new road bridge at Bentley to carry traffic over a new link road has been put in place. A roundabout on the A1079 has also been built.

Kate Henderson, who uses the junction, said traffic had been slow at times, but praised the way the work had been managed.

"It's the delays that you expect really," she said. "It'll be nice to get it finished though."

Another motorist, Alfie Ruthven, said queues had been "really long" at times, adding he had once waited about 30 minutes at the roundabout.

However, he said the scheme would be "perfect" once it was fully open.

Ian Springett said travelling through the area had been difficult during the works.

"But I think probably the delay has been worth it because, looking at it, it's a good job," he said.

Springett said the reopening was "fantastic news".

"If you live in Beverley you'd be delighted with it because it's going to enable people to get around really easily," he said.

"It's going to make a big difference. I bet the businesses are delighted with it as well."
