A 65-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering a woman almost 26 years ago has been released on bail pending further investigation, police have said.

Vicky Glass, 21, was last seen in Middlesbrough in the early hours of 24 September 2000. Her body was discovered six weeks later, in a stream in Danby, North Yorkshire.

Cleveland Police arrested a man in the Lancashire area on Friday and he has since been questioned and released on conditional bail, the force said.

The family of Vicky Glass appealed again for any information following the arrest, saying: "We are in this abyss, 26 years and counting, and we need your help."

In a statement released through the police, the family said: "We would also like to say that even though an arrest has been made, we plead with anyone that has any information to come forward.

"It may feel and seem insignificant but that information, anything that is remembered, things that were seen or heard, it does matter; it could be a piece of a puzzle that continues to haunt us."

The family asked for help to "get justice for Vicky".

"Please speak up; we would never expect anyone to put themselves in harm's way and we can't stress enough that this can be done anonymously if that is what makes you and keeps you safe."

Glass was last seen being dropped off by a taxi driver in Middlesbrough at about 04:00, three days after her 21st birthday.

The investigation into her death was reopened in 2021 with police saying they had "significant new lines" of inquiry.

Police said they believed Glass had been pressured into sex work to fund a heroin addiction.
