Hopes Alderney Week will remain 'free or cheap'

Organisers of an annual week-long event say they hope it will "remain free or very, very cheap" in future years.

Alderney Week started on Saturday and continues until 8 August with events including a fashion show, cavalcade, man-powered flight contest and fireworks.

Vicky Chandler, team leader of Alderney Week, said it was "always an honour" to be part of the event which was first held in 1908.

She said events were either free or came with a small price tag and organisers hoped the week would continue due to its importance to the island.

Chandler said events relied on sponsorship, donations and fundraising to keep costs down for people who wanted to attend.

She added: "It is all about families just enjoying themselves, so I hope we can continue offering free or very, very cheap events for people.

"The population of the island doubles during the week and everybody is enjoying themselves.

"People get excited because they see their friends who they don't potentially meet up with throughout the year, but they know they'll see them and their loved ones during Alderney Week."
