Prison attack on Sara Sharif's father was 'with tin lid'
Surrey PoliceTwo prisoners have appeared in court accused of attempting to murder Urfan Sharif, who was jailed for killing his 10-year-old daughter, Sara Sharif.
Steven Sansom, 47, and Adam Watson, 39, were charged earlier this month following an incident in Belmarsh Prison on 1 January 2025, which left Sharif with injuries to his face, mouth and neck.
The weapon alleged to have been used in the assault was a bent tin lid, according to the charge sheet.
At Westminster Magistrates' Court earlier, Sansom and Watson were told their plea hearing would be on 23 September.
Urfan Sharif and Sara's stepmother, Beinash Batool, were sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering Sara at their family home in Woking, Surrey.
She had been hooded, beaten and burnt during a "campaign of torture" that lasted two years.
'Bloodied and distressed'
In court on Wednesday, prosecutor Jack Wadsworth alleged Watson punched Sharif "repeatedly" in a co-ordinated attack.
He said Sansom then "took him by the neck and applied sustained pressure to his throat".
Prison officers entered the cell and found Sharif "bloodied and distressed", the court heard.
The two men have also been charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH), while Sansom is accused of possessing a knife or offensive weapon in prison.
They appeared in court separately by video link from HMP Wakefield.
PASharif was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years in prison for murder, while his wife Batool received a minimum of 33 years.
Sara's uncle, Faisal Malik, was sentenced to 16 years' imprisonment for causing or allowing her death.
The three fled to Pakistan, with Sara's five siblings, the day before her body was found in 2023.
They hid out there for four weeks before returning to the UK, where they were arrested.
Sara's siblings remain in Pakistan, where they have been living with their paternal grandfather.
