480-home development planned for edge of city
GooglePlans to build 480 homes on the edge of a city are marked for approval despite local objections.
Persimmon Homes has applied for permission to build the development on land at New House Farm in Newby West, near Carlisle.
Cumberland Council's planning committee will meet next week to discuss the proposal, which is recommended for approval by planning officers.
A council report said it received objections from residents who were concerned about loss of green space, lack of suitable roads, loss of biodiversity and flood risk.
The plans were initially approved by Carlisle City Council in 2018, but the project never progressed.
A council report said objections received reflected similar concerns from the original application.
It said: "There is nothing new which affects the recommendation to grant outline permission.
"There are no objections from consultees and the concerns raised regarding highways, flood risk and ecology."
The proposed site is close to where the a new 10,000-home village is planned.
Cumberland Council confirmed the Persimmon Homes development would be separate from this.
According to council documents, if given the go-ahead, the developer must agree to provide 30% of the units as affordable and provide about £2.5 million for extra secondary school places school transport.
The application is at outline stage, meaning if approved, the developer would have to submit further details on its plans.
Cumberland Council is expected to make a decision on Wednesday.
