A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after another man was found dead at a property in South Yorkshire.

Police were called by the ambulance service to Wingfield Road in Barnsley at about 21:15 BST on Thursday.

A man was found with multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to South Yorkshire Police.

A 57-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in police custody, a force spokesperson said.

Formal identification of the dead man had yet to take place, but his family had been informed and was being supported by specialist officers, they said.

A post-mortem examination had been carried out but was "inconclusive", with further tests needed to establish the cause of death, the spokesperson added.

Det Ch Insp Ben Wood said: "We know this will be distressing news to our local communities, and our officers will remain in the Athersley South area throughout the day as our investigation continues.

"A scene is currently in place on Wingfield Road to allow officers to carry out their work and we would encourage anyone with concerns to speak to them."

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation was asked to contact South Yorkshire Police.
