Women to be celebrated at vintage vehicle event

Women who have been involved in organising a vintage motoring festival will be celebrated during this years event, organisers say.

Race the Waves, in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, is a tribute to the 1900s when local beaches were used for motor racing land speed record attempts.

It will be held from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 September and is free to attend.

Jules Osbourn, one of the organisers, said: "People focus on the event, but the lead up to the event and the support that is needed is really important as well. That's where my inspiration for Women of the Waves came from."

"We are celebrating the women that race in the event, but also the women that marshal and volunteer," she said.

The event has been organised by Backfire, in partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Visit East Yorkshire team.

It will feature an array of vintage European and American hot rod vehicles and motorcycles racing in pairs along a 200-yard stretch of beach.

Attractions will include a static auto show, organised by Bridlington Lions, along with a selection of refreshment and community-run stalls.

Fellow organiser Paul Garbutt said: "It actually brings in people with a motorsport interest, but also those who have an interest in being at the seaside watching something that is unique in the UK, which this event is."

Garbutt said riders and spectators from across the UK and Europe were expected to attend.
