Warning over suspected dangerous vape liquid
BBCYoung people are being warned to stay alert to the circulation of illicit vapes, after police seized liquids thought to contain fentanyl.
Durham Police said it seized several suspected Mazza vapes and vape liquids across County Durham. Mazza is the street term for a type of liquid containing unregulated nicotine or cannabis products.
The vapes were seized after concerns were raised they may contain traces of the opioid, of which even a small amount can be fatal.
Although no traces of fentanyl or any other illegal substances were found, the force has advised people to "be cautious of vapes of unknown origin" and for parents to have "frank conversations" about the dangers of smoking them.
Durham Police said it was aware of "community concerns" regarding the use of illicit Mazza vapes over recent days, particularly in the east of the county and among young people.
So far, its inquiries found that "none of the substances we've tested, including those that have been handed in to us, have contained fentanyl.
"No medical tests from injured parties have yet shown any traces of fentanyl," the force said.
It is illegal to sell vapes to those under the age of 18 or to buy a vape for anyone under the age of 18.
