Why were Alex Murdaugh's murder convictions overturned?

Alex Murdaugh, a once powerful lawyer who was convicted of killing his wife and son, has had his 2023 murder convictions overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court. In a 5-0 ruling the court said Murdaugh deserved a new trial because the local county clerk had unfairly biased a jury against him. He's currently serving two life sentences for the murders and an additional 27- and 40-year sentences for state and federal financial crimes.
