Lorry driver 'fell asleep at wheel' on motorway

Police have shared footage of a lorry driver drifting across the motorway after apparently "falling asleep at the wheel".

South Yorkshire Police said the HGV had been spotted on the M18 during a recent operation, with officers taking action to intercept the vehicle.

According to a force spokesperson, "multiple cans of energy drinks" were found inside the cab, which the driver "had been using to overcome his tiredness".

The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, had been "processed" for the offences", the spokesperson said.

The force said: "These operations are not about targeting those who use the road network for work, or those in bigger vehicles, they are about saving lives, and it cannot be shied away from that vehicles of a larger size and weight can have devastating consequences.

"Roads policing officers see the aftermath collisions cause, and are the ones delivering the news to families and friends. People think it won't happen to them, but it can happen to anyone."
