Seaweed keeps cows 'running like F1 engines'

The owners of a farm shop said they were feeding their cattle seaweed to keep their stomachs "running like Formula 1 engines".

Fourth-generation farmer Matt Branson and his wife Stacey have incorporated seaweed and homemade porridge oats into their cows' diets at their farm in Glatton, Cambridgeshire.

Dr Pamela Walsh, a specialist in algae-based animal feeds from Queen's University Belfast, said small amounts of some types of seaweed could have an antibiotic effect on cows, while others could reduce their methane emissions.

"It's good for the animal, but it's like anything we eat. If we eat all of one thing, it's never good for our health," she explained.
