'People can change': Scandal-hit Platner on Maine primary win

Graham Platner, whose campaign was rocked by multiple scandals, has won the Maine primary and will run as the state's Democratic candidate for the US Senate in the midterm elections.

"If you believe as I do that we can change our politics and change our country, then you must also believe that people can change," Platner said, as he thanked supporters on 9 June.

The former combat marine and oyster farmer was the subject of damaging investigations about his past by major national media outlets, but he refused to drop out of the race.

He will now face-off against Maine's longtime Republican Senator Susan Collins in November.
