A residents' petition calling for new measures to protect a Surrey village from the impact of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) has gathered over 400 signatures.

Oxshott community group Federation of Oxshott Residents and Associations (Fedora) is calling for Surrey County Council to install automatic number plate recognition cameras.

Fedora says night-time HGV restrictions and a 20mph speed limit in the centre of the village, are suffering from a lack of enforcement.

Councillor Andy Burton who is supporting the petition, says: "The continuous heavy traffic has a devastating impact on village life and many residents living close to the road."

Changes were made three years ago to introduce the night-time HGV restrictions and 20mph speed limit in the centre of the village, the Local Democracy Reporting Service says.

Residents also requested improvements to road safety, including the creation of continuous pavements so pedestrians, including school children, would not need to cross busy roads as often.

The petition says: "Oxshott has a school population across three schools of over 1,000 children.

"Children walking to school must cross a road carrying more than 18,000 vehicles per day, often travelling in excess of speed limits, up to 30 times per week."

The petition will run on the council's website until 2 September.

A county council spokesperson said: "Once the petition is submitted, it will be considered carefully and a formal response will be provided.

"We will be able to update further in due course."
