Three people have been taken to hospital to be assessed for smoke inhalation after a tumble dryer caught fire at a home in St Helier.

Firefighters wearing breathing equipment tackled the fire and cleared smoke from the basement property and a neighbouring property after the callout at about 18:00 BST on Tuesday.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was thought to have started within the electrical components of a tumble dryer which was being used at the time.

The service said the fire crew found the occupants had already left the building after a fire alarm had sounded.

A spokesperson for the fire service advised people not to attempt to tackle fire themselves as they can develop rapidly and "smoke can become life-threatening within minutes".

People should leave a building immediately if there is a fire, closing doors if possible to contain it, ensure everyone is accounted for and call the emergency services, they added.
