Police have praised the bravery of a woman after the rapist who attacked her was jailed.

Mohamed Harun, 32, invited the woman to an address in Sunderland in 2024 where he raped her, detectives said, but while fleeing the property she alerted police who arrested him shortly after.

Det Insp Martin Cottle, from Northumbria Police's Rape Investigation Team, said: "She was preyed on in a horrific way because her attacker thought she was vulnerable, but she has shown immense strength to come forward."

At Newcastle Crown Court, Harun was found guilty of rape and sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. He was placed on the sex offenders register for life.

Cottle said of the woman: "Thanks to her courageous actions, we were able to provide enough evidence to secure a charge two days later which has ultimately resulted in this dangerous perpetrator being brought to justice."
