Residents evacuated due to second suspicious item
BBCSeveral houses have been evacuated after a second "suspicious item" has been found in an area of a city, following an earlier incident on Saturday.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said officers had returned to Fallowfield, in Manchester, on Sunday afternoon after reports of the item being found outside a property on Rostherne Avenue.
It followed an incident on Saturday, when a "suspicious item" was found by a resident in their front garden in Abram Close, just after 18:05. Twenty homes were evacuated, and residents returned home just before midnight.
Det Ch Insp Peter Morley said to residents "please be reassured that there is no wider threat".
"We thank everyone for their patience so far whilst we deal with this incident as our investigation into the full circumstances continues."
He said a number of road closures were in place, and urged people to avoid the area and find alternative routes.
"Officers will be on hand to ensure the safety of people in the nearby area – please speak to them if you have any concerns," he added.
He appealed for anyone with information or footage to contact the force.
A GMP spokesperson said no arrests have been made but inquiries were ongoing, with officers and partner agencies currently on scene and a cordon in place.
As a precaution, several houses in the area have been evacuated, police continued.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it had returned to the scene with police on Sunday to investigate further.
