'Level crossings fault is not a safety issue'

A railway signalling fault is being investigated after concerns were raised about unusual activity at level crossings.

Trains travelling through Cherry Hinton on the outskirts of Cambridge use crossings in High Street and Yarrow Road on lines to Ipswich and Norwich.

A spokesperson for Network Rail and Greater Anglia said trains were stopping before they reached the crossings due to a minor fault with the "protecting signal".

"When this happens, the train stops before the crossing, the barriers are lowered, and the train is only then authorised to proceed under caution," they added.

Network Rail said its teams were working to find a solution.

"We want to reassure everyone that the level crossing at Cherry Hinton is operating correctly, safely and as expected," a spokesperson added.
