'We got married on the day of the 1966 World Cup final'

For many English football fans, 30 July 1966 is one of the most iconic dates in sporting history - the one and only time that England have won the World Cup.

But for Tony and Jennifer Powell, it was one of the biggest days of their life for another reason - it was their wedding day.

"My mother had sorted everything out for the wedding, she'd got that done the year before, so it wasn't our fault we got married on World Cup final day," Jennifer told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

"But it was quite amusing in a way."

The couple, from Kidderminster, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday, which was also 60 years since England were victorious.

Six decades ago, the future Tony and Jennifer Powell said their vows at a church in South Littleton at noon, knowing the final kicked off at 14:00 BST which would be during their wedding meal.

As guests ate, the only clues about the score were whisperings from the waiters and the odd shout from outside.

"As soon as the meal was over, everyone disappeared upstairs to the television room," Jennifer said.

"It was extra time," Tony added. "If the Germans hadn't equalised, we'd have been away.

"But because they equalised, most of the guests crammed into this little room to watch it on a black and white screen."

At most weddings, the guests would pour outside to tie items to the couple's car and shower them in confetti.

But the newly married couple decided to make their exit while the game was still on, so their farewell was quiet.

"Three people came out to see us go," Jennifer said.

"Luckily I had a relative who lived en route to where we were going and I saw England's fourth goal," Tony said.

"It was nail-biting because we knew we were the better team but we knew that the Germans never gave up," he added.

"I mean they scored first and then we got a couple of good goals, but they fought back and fair play to them they equalised.

"I thought 'there's at least half an hour of this, what am I gonna do? I mean, I can't desert my wife, we'll have to go'."

Sixty years on and the pair do not think another World Cup victory for England is on the horizon, although Tony has not lost his love of football.

When asked what the secret was to 60 years of marriage, Jennifer said: "You learn to tolerate certain habits and funny little ways."

For Tony, the answer is: "I think it's good we still argue because it shows we care."
