Water mains work to improve reliability under way

Work to improve the reliability of water supplies in part of Bradford has begun.

The £1.2m project in West Bowling will see about five miles (8.8km) of mains replaced, with a view to cutting leaks and helping prevent bursts in the area, Yorkshire Water said.

The work will take place in Newton Street, Manchester Road, Ripley Street, News Cross Street, St Stephens Road and Gaythorne Road across an eight-month period.

The firm said residents in the area had been informed, adding that it would be working to try and reduce any disruption.

The West Bowling scheme is the latest mains replacement project to start in the district, with work also currently taking place in Bingley, Keighley and Thornbury.

Schemes have already been completed in Fagley, Laisterdyke, Oakworth, and Lower Wyke, the firm said.

The work is part of Yorkshire Water's £406m investment to replace more than 620 miles (1,000km) of water mains across the region over the next five years.

Project manager Scott Gammon said they were targeting the areas "most prone to leaks and bursts".

"We'll be working quickly and doing everything that we can to keep disruption to a minimum whilst we deliver this important work," he added.
