City's busy roundabout to shut for overnight works

One of Peterborough's busiest roundabouts will be closed overnight from Sunday evening until Monday morning's rush-hour, while work continues on the City Link project.

The Queensgate roundabout will be shut in all directions from 20:00 BST on 9 August until 06:00 the next morning.

The work will involve moving the current site access point, and road lining and street lighting work will also be carried out while the junction is closed.

Peterborough City Council said signed diversion routes would be in place during the closure.

The work, which began in July, is the first phase of the £65m Station Quarter project, which aims to create a new pedestrian-friendly City Link "gateway" between the railway station and the city centre.

About 1,000 tonnes of concrete is being used to fill two underpasses, which will eventually be replaced by a new street-level crossing connecting the station area with Cowgate.

The project is expected to run until May 2027 and will see the Queensgate roundabout reduced to a single lane for about a year.

Last week, work on the scheme was paused after seven human skeletons were uncovered on site. Archaeologists said the remains were believed to be linked to a former medieval cemetery in the area.

Peterborough City Council leader Shabina Qayyum previously acknowledged the disruption the works would cause.

"We're sorry about that; we cannot avoid it," she said.

"Please support this game-changing, once-in-a-generation regeneration project for our city."
