Taller turbine approved despite aircraft concerns
Getty ImagesPlans to replace a wind turbine at a farm near Filey with a taller one have been approved despite Ministry of Defence (MoD) concerns that it could obstruct low-flying aircraft.
The proposals for a 150ft (46m) turbine at Magdalen Grange Farm in Gristhorpe were given the go-ahead by North Yorkshire Council after the applicant said it would increase the efficiency and longevity of the farm's green infrastructure.
The MoD had said the turbine was in its low-flying area - with aircraft operating as low as 250ft (76m) - and it had the potential to create "a physical obstruction to air traffic movements".
The MoD asked for a condition requiring enough information so conflicts could be avoided.
According to the plans, the new turbine, which would replace the previous 110ft (34m) structure, would be delivered by four large lorries, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
The scheme stated: "As no abnormal loads are required, the highway and transportation impact is minimal and the proposal is therefore considered to have a negligible effect on the local highway network."
North Yorkshire Council approved the application, subject to conditions.
