A beloved 17th-century pub could reopen as early as next year after plans for its transformation were approved.

The Ivy Inn in Heddington near Calne, Wiltshire, is owned by the Friends of the Ivy group, after locals fought for it to become an asset of community value (ACV) following its closure in May 2024.

The Grade II listed thatched pub has now been granted Listed Building Consent by Wiltshire Council for extensions and improvements designed to secure its future as a community pub.

Acting chairman Richard Ring said: "We're truly on our way to opening The Ivy as soon as possible in 2027."

The plans include two single-storey rear extensions, improved toilet facilities including an accessible WC, a new beer cellar, drainage works around the building, a log burner and additional kitchen space.

The existing kitchen will also gain a pitched natural slate roof, while a new ramp will improve access and existing windows will be repaired.

The architects behind the plans said they hoped to create a viable pub and community venue, helping tackle social isolation while providing employment, training and opportunities for local suppliers.

The council's conservation officer initially warned of potential heritage loss, but planners concluded the public benefits, including securing the pub's future, jobs and improved disabled access, outweighed those concerns.

The decision marks a turning point in a long-running battle by villagers to save the pub.

The Friends of the Ivy group said the approval meant the project could move beyond repairs and into "full-blown construction and development".

Thanking supporters, Ring said: "Without all your help we really couldn't have got this far."
