Paul Hart, 57, died when his car was involved in a collision with another vehicle on Saturday

A man who died in a car crash while driving his wife to work has been described as an "exceptionally proud and doting grandad".

Paul Hart, 57, from Shafton, near Barnsley, was fatally injured when the white Ford EcoSport he was driving collided with a blue Volkswagen Polo on the A628 Hemsworth bypass at about 06:00 GMT on Saturday.

His wife, 60, was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, West Yorkshire Police said. A 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving remains on police bail.

In a statement, Paul's family said: "His sudden loss is devastating to all who had the privilege of knowing him."

They added: "Paul was a beloved husband, son, brother, father, stepdad, uncle, brother-in-law, and true friend.

"More recently, he took immense joy in becoming an exceptionally proud, doting grandad to his five-month-old granddaughter.

"Paul will be lovingly remembered and profoundly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and his extended Airsoft family."

Officers investigating the crash have appealed for any witnesses to the collision or the circumstances leading up to it, particularly anyone with relevant dashcam footage, to get in touch.
