A landlady has thanked neighbours for their support after paint was thrown over her and her husband's pub.

Aleks Earl said she and her husband Noah had it had been "absolutely heartbreaking" to find their pub, the Ship Inn in Mevagissey, had been covered in white paint.

She said it had been "devastating" to see the damage on Wednesday but villagers had sprung into action to clean the paint up and in doing so had "reminded us exactly why we love being part of Mevagissey".

"That kindness and community spirit means more to us than we can put into words," Earl added.

She said: "People turned up without being asked and simply got stuck in."

The landlady said windows close to latches and a port hole window on the front door had been damaged by the perpetrators.

"We think they tried to get in, couldn't and then got the paint and splashed it all over the pub," she added.

Earl said neighbours had worked in the rain to clean the Grade II listed building, which the couple took over four months ago, and council workers had removed the paint off the road in front of it.

"We were open as normal, it was amazing," she added.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said inquiries were ongoing after a report of criminal damage at the pub overnight between Tuesday 1 September and Wednesday 2 September.
