Disappointment at impending closure of town bank
Google MapsPeople have expressed their disappointment at the "impending closure" of a bank in a town centre.
Lloyds, at the Market Place in the Wiltshire town of Devizes, is set to shut on 21 October.
Ben Reed, a councillor who represents Devizes North, said: "While we do still have HSBC and Nationwide in the town plus the post office, this is a huge blow to Lloyds customers who will need to travel to Chippenham or Trowbridge for the nearest branch."
Lloyds said staff will be moved to other branches and support will be offered for vulnerable customers.
A spokesperson from the bank told BBC Wiltshire that several services, such as a community banker in Devizes and a 24/7 messaging service, meant Lloyds was offering customers "more choice and convenience than ever before".
But Reed said it had been "disappointing to hear about the impending closure" and that many customers will be feeling anxious about their future banking arrangements.
Ben ReedHe said he is working with Devizes Town Council to explore ways to retain banking services in the town.
Sarah Cardy, CEO of Age UK Wiltshire, said the closure would affect older people, and encouraged them to get in touch with the charity for help.
She said: "Many older people still rely on face-to-face banking, whether it's for support with everyday transactions or for the reassurance of speaking to someone in person.
"Closures like this can leave them feeling isolated or anxious about managing their money, so it's vital that good alternatives are in place."
