Police issue 30 offence reports at 500-car meet

Thirty traffic offence reports were issued after more than 500 drivers brought their vehicles to a car meet at a retail park in Sheffield, police have said.

Officers attended the event at Drakehouse Retail Park on Monday night and spent several hours carrying out checks on drivers and vehicles, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Offences included heavily tinted windows and drivers failing to display number plates, a force spokesperson said.

Sgt Martyn Micklethwaite said: "While some people were abiding by the law, there were still people intent on arriving in dangerously kept cars, without insurance, or with modifications that can cost lives."

One vehicle was seized for having no insurance, while two others were seized after being driven in a dangerous manner, police said.

Two drivers were prohibited from driving because of the condition of their vehicles.

Micklethwaite said officers would not tolerate motorists using car meets as an opportunity to show off poorly maintained vehicles and put lives at risk.

He said: "We see the impact collisions have and, as roads policing officers, we are the ones supporting families through tragedies no one should endure."
