Speed limits could be implemented on 18 roads in Cambridge to improve safety, the county council says

People in Cambridge are being invited to share their thoughts on proposals to introduce 20mph (32km/h) limits on several major roads.

Cambridgeshire County Council said the speed restrictions would affect 18 routes, including parts of Milton Road, Trumpington Road and Hills Road.

The authority said it had launched a consultation which would run until 5 August.

Liberal Democrat chair of the highways committee, Alex Beckett, said: "The revised proposals focus on routes where over 100 people have suffered serious injuries since 2017 and where 20mph limits would make a big difference in keeping people safe."

The council said the new proposals followed on from its work in 2024 to introduce more 20mph limits on roads across the city.

Other planned speed limit restrictions include parts of Barton Road, Chesterton Road, Croft Holme Lane, East Road and Victoria Avenue.

Beckett, a Liberal Democrat councillor, added: "I urge everyone to let us know their thoughts on the proposals as part of this consultation, so we can understand the views of local residents, businesses and community groups and then make the best decision for everyone."

The council said the consultation's results would be reviewed by its road safety officers and councillors.

A decision on the plans is expected to be taken towards the end of the year, with any changes to the roads made in early 2027.
