E-scooter warning after fire at home

Firefighters have issued a warning after an e-scooter caught fire in a home.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to Humber Road in Witham on Wednesday at 09:43 BST.

Station manager Scott Fretton said the occupant "realised the electric scooter battery had ignited and threw the scooter outside before it was fully alight".

He added: "Do not keep or charge e-bikes or e-scooters in your home if possible, and never leave them unattended while charging".

Fretton said the incident highlighted the importance of safe storage because lithium-ion batteries that ignite will cause an intense, explosive, and toxic fire.

"Always use a charger approved by the manufacturer and replace the battery and charger if you spot any signs of wear or damage," he added.

The crew left the scene at 10:03 BST.
